Thoughts on Hurricane Katrina, New Orleans, and having a brand new baby boy

The ASCD conference is coming to New Orleans. This is a huge group of teachers and educators. I know this is probably somewhere else other than the earthtimes, but that's where I found it. I wish I was a teacher right now, because I would ask to be paid to attend. Also, my wife's company is one of the sponsors though she's not going anywhere for the next few months. If you get a chance, they are collecting money for teachers who need critical classroom supplies. This is a good organization, and I hope that you New Orleanians show them a good time, that things are still works in progress, and that help is still needed.
I grew up in Metairie, LA and lived in actual New Orleans for 12 years. The day that I turned 30, I moved to New Jersey and then to Easton, PA 4 years ago. As luck would have it, I was in New Orleans when Katrina approached and evacuated to Jackson, MS. Other than that, I am a Latin and history teacher at a small, independent school in NJ. I miss New Orleans a lot, think about it all the time, and try to go there whenever the work schedule allows.
